Welcome to My Wonderful World Afloat

Superyacht deckhands

Welcome to my web site, where I chronicle the life of a superyacht deckhand -- me.

I don't mean to brag, but I live an amazingly wonderful life. I get paid to see the world aboard a luxury superyacht.

When I started this site, I was sitting in the harbor of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. By the time you read this, I could be in St. Tropez or Ibiza or any one of numerous other exciting ports of call.

Boats have always been my life. I've had boat jobs ranging from hauling divers to a Caribbean coral reef to pulling in nets aboard a fishing vessel in Alaska. My current deckhand employment aboard one of the most luxurious private yachts in the world beats them all.

I'm always amazed at how few people are aware that this lifestyle even exists. Yacht crew jobs are open to individuals from all backgrounds. Being a crew member on a superyacht can be a summer's experience or a lifetime's adventure. The wages are great and the benefits can't be beat. (Learn how you can get in on the superyacht lifestyle, too.)

On this web site, I will share my personal story in the deckhand business. I will tell you about the characters I've met, both the weird and the wonderful ones. I will also recount some of my many personal adventures (including perhaps a few of the ones that are on the romantic side of the ledger). Most of these will be found in the blog section of the site.

Besides revealing my personal story, I will provide information for those who may be interested in how to get a boat job. Yacht crew positions really are available to those who will make an effort to learn about them and go after them.

Yes, you need specialized training for yacht crew jobs, but this is easy to acquire. Prior experience afloat will go a long way to finding deckhand opportunities as well. But the most important skill a deckhand can have is the ability to learn, coupled with enthusiasm for the sea.

If your serious about getting into this business, you need to make your way, by hook or by crook (as they say) to the places where the mega yachts and superyachts congregate. The two main regions are the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. But if you live any ocean coast (or are willing to move there), you have a good chance of getting hired aboard a luxury vessel. Opportunities in this field are increasingly available in the major ports of North America, Asia and the South Pacific.

The owners and captains of superyachts currently face a shortage of crew members, believe it or not. I know because they tell me. The situation is so tight that the folks who do the hiring for the big yachts are constantly trying to lure me away from my present position to join some other boat at higher wages! If that's not being in the catbird's seat, I don't know what is.

If you happen to have skills as an engineer or a chef, you can be assured of a well-paid job at sea; in fact, you will virtually be able to name your price. But even without such specialized skills, you can grab hold of a job as a general boat deckhand, or a steward/stewardess.

Take it from someone who has been on the inside for years and traveled around the world. There's a yacht crew job waiting for you. The training is available, and if you have the good attitude and work ethic that the superyacht employers are looking for, the world is your oyster.

In case you're wondering, yes, there are yacht crew opportunities for women as well as men. I meet women in this business all the time. Some have become very good friends of mine, and I know that they're treated with the same respect and paid the same high wages as male crew members.

Women are are in great demand aboard superyachts, and not just as stewardesses. Many work as deckhands, engineers, chef's assistants and chefs. Women are well represented, at all levels, in the mega- and superyacht industry.

Whatever your sex, age or background, there is room in the yacht deckhand lifestyle for more people than currently even know about this amazing lifestyle and career opportunity. If this web site whets your appetitite to try it yourself, I will be very pleased. If you just want to read about my own real adventures deckhanding on a superyacht, that will make me quite happy, too.

Thanks for dropping by. Maybe I will see you at sea one day!
