If I were asked to name the most important skill a deckhand should have, you might be surprised. It's not some technical ability or deep knowledge of boat handling or anything like that.  It's enthusiasm, combined with confidence and a sincere willingness to learn.  If you have these traits you will go far in a yacht crew career. In fact, they are the traits you need most in order to take advantage of a boat job employment opportunity to begin with.  If these things don't come naturally to you, do make an effort to cultivate them.  See my Dynamic Deckhands page for more about this.

One of the things I truly appreciate about yacht crewing is that it gives me time to play around with little side businesses, if I want. For example, I've gone and created my own online t-shirt shop, geared toward people who play musical instruments.  You can see the InstruMentals t-shirt shop itself or check out my t-shirt gallery web page where I also talk about creating the store.

Good morning, fellow deckies (and future deckies)! Just having some breakfast and watching Charlotte Amalie come to life.  In a couple of days I'll be rejoining my boat, whose identity I'm keeping secret for now, as we'll be cruising most of the islands of the Caribbean through June and July.  I believe that the plan is, after that, for us to sail to the Mediterranean. This is the life! Have I said that before? :-)
